Hidden Hurricane Roof Damage You Can't See From the Ground
After a storm, plenty of Florida homeowners look up, see no missing shingles, and assume they’re fine. But the most expensive roof damage is often the kind you can’t see from the ground — until it shows up as a leak months later.
What hides up there
- Lifted or creased shingles that look flat from below but broke their seal
- Bruised or fractured shingles from hail/debris impact
- Loosened or displaced flashing around vents, chimneys, and valleys
- Granule loss exposing the mat underneath
- Punctures from flying debris
- Compromised underlayment even when the surface looks okay
Why it matters
A broken seal or hidden puncture lets water in slowly. By the time you see a ceiling stain, there may already be rotted decking, soaked insulation, or mold — far costlier than the original fix. It can also complicate an insurance claim if you report it late.
What to do after a storm
- Don’t climb up yourself — stay safe.
- Get a professional roof inspection with documentation (photos/report).
- File any claim promptly with that documentation.
- If damage is significant, consider upgrading to metal so the next storm doesn’t repeat this.
