Can You Put a Metal Roof Over Shingles in Florida?
A common question we hear: “Can I just put a metal roof right over my old shingles and skip the tear-off?” The short answer in Florida: sometimes — but it’s usually not the right call. Here’s why.
What’s technically possible
Metal can be installed over existing shingles in some cases, often using a furring/batten system. It can save on tear-off labor and disposal.
Why we usually recommend a tear-off in Florida
- Code & inspections: Florida’s strict codes often require evaluating the decking underneath — which you can’t do without removing the old roof.
- Hidden damage: old shingles can hide rotted or soft decking that must be fixed for a wind-rated install.
- Moisture & longevity: trapping old materials underneath can cause moisture issues and shorten your new roof’s life.
- Insurance/warranty: a clean install on sound decking is easier to document for wind-mitigation credits and warranties.
The bottom line
A proper tear-off costs a bit more but protects the investment you’re making in a 40–70 year roof. Cutting that corner can undermine the whole point of going metal.
