Standing Seam vs. Exposed Fastener Metal Roofs: Which Is Right for You?
“Metal roof” isn’t one thing. The two most common systems — standing seam and exposed fastener — look and perform differently. Here’s how to choose.
Standing seam
Panels lock together with hidden fasteners and raised vertical seams.
- Pros: cleanest modern look, no exposed screws to fail, excellent water-tightness and wind performance, longest life
- Cons: higher cost, requires skilled installation
Exposed fastener (corrugated/ribbed)
Panels are screwed down with visible fasteners through the metal.
- Pros: more affordable, faster install, proven and durable
- Cons: the exposed screws/gaskets eventually need maintenance; slightly more utilitarian look
How to decide
- Want the premium, lowest-maintenance, longest-lasting option? Standing seam.
- Want metal’s durability at a friendlier price? Exposed fastener is a solid choice.
- Coastal/high-wind exposure? Standing seam’s hidden fasteners are especially worth it.
Both dramatically outlast asphalt shingles and qualify for Florida wind-mitigation benefits when installed to code.
